Amazon alone spent $131 billion on capital expenditures in 2025, most of it for data centers, with plans to deploy approximately $200 billion in 2026. Google has committed roughly $180 billion for the year. Microsoft is tracking toward $120 billion. These are not projections hedged with caution. These are contracted commitments backed by order backlogs that exceed capacity.
What this means for the service industry is significant. Every server rack, every liquid cooling loop, every uninterruptible power system, every facility management system deployed across these environments needs to be installed, commissioned, maintained, and supported. The capital investment does not build itself. It requires a human infrastructure of credentialed, trained, deployable technicians who can execute at scale and on schedule.

The Shortage Nobody Can Build Their Way Out Of

In 2026, the construction industry alone faces a shortage of more than 500,000 skilled workers. Projections from multiple research groups suggest the U.S. could have nearly 1.4 million unfilled skilled trades positions by 2030. Deloitte estimates the economic cost of this gap at $124 billion in lost construction output if it is not addressed.
The trades most acutely impacted are the same ones powering data center construction and ongoing operations: electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, industrial automation technicians, and low-voltage fiber specialists. According to Randstad’s analysis of more than 50 million global job postings, demand for robotics technicians has grown 107% since 2022, HVAC engineer demand is up 67%, and industrial automation technician vacancies have increased 51%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 81,000 annual job openings for electricians alone through 2034, classified as growing much faster than average.
Talent shortages are already affecting construction schedules, commissioning timelines, and long-term operational reliability.

The compounding problem is demographic. Roughly one in four skilled tradespeople globally is nearing retirement age. Approximately 20,000 electricians leave the field annually. For every five tradespeople retiring, only about two are entering to replace them. McKinsey estimates there are 20 skilled trade job openings for every one new worker entering the field through 2032.
Wages are rising to reflect this reality. Average hourly pay in construction reached $40.55 in January 2026, with average weekly earnings running roughly 25% higher than the private sector average. Senior electricians with specialized knowledge of data center technology, including liquid cooling and fiber cabling, can command salaries approaching $300,000. That wage pressure is real and it is accelerating.
The challenge is not simply finding workers. It is the full cycle: recruiting from an expanded, non-traditional talent pool, running background and compliance checks, completing product-specific credentialing, delivering hands-on training tied to OEM standards, and then deploying and managing that workforce with the discipline that mission-critical environments demand.

One of the more consequential dynamics emerging in the market right now is one that does not receive enough attention: technology companies and OEMs that have built deep, experienced technician workforces are reducing those workforces to cut costs, even as demand for that exact skillset reaches historic highs.
The scale of tech industry layoffs over the past 18 months has been significant. In 2025, nearly 246,000 tech employees were laid off across more than 780 companies globally. Through the first months of 2026, the pace has not slowed. Oracle has executed reductions affecting tens of thousands of employees.
