Have you ever read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl? Even if you haven’t, you are most likely familiar with the story. Young Charlie Bucket discovers a golden ticket in his candy bar, and he joins four other golden ticket winners in an exclusive visit to the factory of eccentric and brilliant chocolatier Willy Wonka. Quirky adventures and moral commentaries ensue.
A portion of the story often overshadowed by the mystery and eccentricities of Wonka and his factory is the period of time before Charlie finds his golden ticket. We learn that Wonka’s factory has been closed to the public for 10 years after Wonka discovered competitors’ spies among his workforce. The gates were closed, and no one was seen entering or leaving the buildings in those 10 years, but candy production and distribution continued.
How could the factory continue to produce candy after all Wonka’s employees were gone? In the story, Wonka reveals that production was on hold until he happened upon the Oompa-Loompas in his travels and they agreed to come live and work at his factory. Their relationship is mutually beneficial. In bringing the Oompa-Loompas to live and work at his factory, Wonka rescued them from living in close proximity to dangerous predators (snozzwangers and whangdoodles) and he pays them in their favorite food: cacao beans. Wonka benefits by having extra hands to help him produce his candy so he can focus his attention on inventing new and delicious wonders to excite children of all ages.
